Thankful Thursday - All Blessings

Happy Thanksgiving!

Today is a "traditional" day of thanks, but we need to be thankful daily -- for all things, even the small blessings!

As I sit here typing with TWO hands -- that is a blessing, sometimes my fingers don't cooperate due to the surgery, but for the most part I am doing well. It is truly a miracle what God has done with my arm.

Yes, I did have to have surgery, yes I do have a metal elbow, yes I do have a long ugly scar on my arm, no it is not 100%, and yes it is still painful -- BUT it could have been so much worse. It was a long 10 days with that cast on, but amazingly enough I have NO cast on my arm today!! I do have to baby it, and sling it, and not pick up over a pound with my right hand but I honestly believe that is was through prayer that I am doing as well as I am. I give God all the glory.

Today, I am thankful for the simple things -- that I hope I never take advantage of.

  • The Lord Jesus Christ and His saving grace.
  • My husband and children
  • My Pastor and his wife, our church family and friends.
  • A home, clothes on my back, a car to drive, a job and food to eat. God is so good to provide these small blessings.
  • Blogging friends -- they encourage me and I do learn so much from them.

It will be a quiet day here -- and that's okay. My children will be here along with my brother, whom I have not shared a Thanksgiving Day or any holiday with for 20 years. God answered many prayers on his behalf. My hub will help me with dinner and kids with clean up. We usually stop by Kmart to check out their sales -- and later plan out a route for Black Friday. Thankfully I started shopping weeks ago -- and really don't have much to buy -- I did have a minor set back and do have some things I still need to make!!

It will be a busy month with the holidays, my birthday and work demands as a class of students depart for home and a new class arrives!

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving my friends -- may you be blessed abundantly with His grace.

My Accident ... I guess
I can call it that, because I definitely did not plan it! About 520 am Thursday morning I showered, my usual routine. I always leave 2 towels on the toilet because its easy to get to. I wrapped my hair in one and then proceeded to dry off with the other. Well, I didn't like that one, {I know -- a towel is a towel, but its really not!} So, I scooted over to the other side of the tub and reached out for another ... as I reached out I lost my balance a bit and went to grab for the peg to catch myself. That blasted peg came right out of the hole and down I went!

It wasn't pretty after that. My arm was twisted off to the side and I could not lift it, and started screaming for my husband. Yes, I totally wimped out -- I felt so "weird" -- sick, sweating profusely and really bad so quickly. My hub was trying to get me up and dressed before all that adrenaline left and the real pain began. If it didn't end up being so awful -- it could have gotten an award for a comedy act!

We did manage to get me in a skirt, socks, slippers and hubs bathrobe. LOL Melinda saved me by bringing me some tops at the emergency room. I am sure I ruined her day off! But she saved my modesty! Ugh!

The ER nurses were so helpful -- AFTER I got past the receptionist who wanted to know why I couldn't pick up the phone to tell them what was wrong. No chance at all that I was letting my right arm out of my lefts hold so it could swing like a pendulum! {eye roll}

I ended up dislocating it and cracking the elbow. They put me out to put it back in place. Thankfully!! I have to wonder if that caused more damage? The ER doc did NOT want to do it, and he never had to because he went off shift, {sigh} They called an ortho doctor who said it had to be put back ... and so they did.

That same ortho doc made room reservations at another hospital and said I would need surgery. Off we went -- only to find out that I would need replacement parts so surgery was scheduled for the next morning. I did not want to stay there!

Melinda and her hub came up to see me -- and brought me a Coke Zero and Lemon heads, and our Pastor and his wife too.

I made it thru the night at the last thing I remember was one of the docs saying "I am going to give you something to make you sleepy ..." And waking up in recovery. LOL

Minutes after I fell my husband was in the bathroom, praying and I felt God's hand upon the situation ... I'm not sure of the reason for it all, but perhaps someday it will be revealed to us.

Back to the doctor on Monday -- thank for your prayers!!!

Thankful Thursday - the mercies of God

First, and always I am thankful for Jesus Christ, His grace and mercy and goodness to me and my loved ones. He truly is awesome Savior.

I am thankful for the prayers that were sent heavenward upon my behalf after my accident last week. Brothers and Sisters in my home church, fellow bloggers and friends. I honestly believe that it was through these prayers that it went as well as it did! God Has a reason and a plan for this, although He has yet to share it with me.

The international students at my work - they have been so kind to me, each class sent me flowers (we have 2 classes), emails and phone calls to check on me. I was astounded at the care they have shown to me -- so many have stopped by my desk to check in with me. One class graduates in a month and they head home across the seas -- they will be sorely missed. They were my first class and I have gotten to know so many. Its going to be so hard to see them go. One reason I went back to work so quickly was so I would have more days with them -- our officer from Rwanda sent me an email about my vacant seat and that they were leaving soon and just could not have that! When its not such a struggle to type, I will share more about them all.

My new elbow -- scares me a little -- all that metal inside my body. Its time like these where the trust in God has to step in. Fear will drive us mad.

My husband and boys have been a big help to me, I hate being a burden but its nice to know I have help when I need it.

I am thankful God saved me from flat on the highway yesterday. I noticed before I left home and Stephen was able to help me get air in it. My hub had to get two new tires on it today.

I am thankful for our health, our Pastor and his wife; the word of God that speaks to my heart and soul and causes me to change my thinking; family and friends who will pray for me; being able to meet all our bills, and actually have a little indulgence once in a while.

Please visit Crystal at God is in Control…NOT ME! who is hosting this week. Iris at Sting my heart is taking a little break, and she is missed. Visit Crystal for more Thankful Thursday praises!

Bionic Elbow

They say I will set off every alarm with my new elbow ... when we passed the justice center on Veteran's Day, I tried to get my hub to take me inside to see if the alarms really do go off when you walk through! Nothing doing. A girl has to be prepared, ya Know? LOL!

You always think it will never happen ...
when you read those stories of people falling in the shower and the bathroom and blow it off. I have even fallen ... but not like Thursday morning! Our pastor always preaches how life can change in an instant ... it can.

Its hard to type one handed and i am not feeling my best this am, but want to try and get to church ... thanks so much for your prayers -- I am so thankful as I have slready seen how the Lord has answered. I'll share an image of my new bionic elbow --ugh -- not too happy about the metal inside my body but .... God's grace is sufficient. much love ... write later!

Favorite Ingredients Friday- Cookie edition

Our family loves these cookies -- these were fondly made by my mom. She made them all year for us because she knew we all loved them! They roll out easy (which is a plus for me!) I made these last year for Christmas, as we lost my mom in 2005 -- and it brought back so many good memories of all the love she put in making these for us. I miss her and her spoiling us with treats!

WINKLER SUGAR COOKIES
(makes approx. 8 dozen)

Ingredients:------------
3/4 lb butter
4 1/2 c sugar
5 eggs
5 c flour
1 tsp cream of tartar
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp lemon extract
1/2 tsp almond extract -- (I usually just use vanilla)

Instructions:-------------
Cream butter and sugar in a large mixing bowl. Add eggs one at a time. In a separate bowl, combine flour, cream of tartar, salt, baking soda and nutmeg. Beat extracts into butter mixture and gradually incorporate flour mixture, blending thoroughly. Place dough in greased bowl and refrigerate overnight.

Before baking, preheat oven to 350F. Roll dough out on floured pastry cloth. Cut with cookie cutters and bake on greased cookie sheets for 10-15minutes until golden brown.
